Don Olson passed away on October 7 at The Willows Memory Care facility under the care of Compassionate Care Hospice of Sumter County. He was 94 years old.
Don was born on June 1, 1926 in Evanston, Illinois to John and Helen Olson. He was predeceased by his brother, John Robert. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Eleanor Olson of Lady Lake, his two daughters, Ginny Hagen of New Mexico and Holly Olson of California, his granddaughter, Melissa Dezendorf, her husband Joey and their son, Ely. Don's great grandson, Ely, is 12 years old.
Prior to moving to the Villages in 2002 Don and Eleanor lived in Irving, TX. He spent his career of almost 40 years working for the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America retiring as Director of the Editorial Service. He was responsible for the publication of the Boy Scout handbook as well as the merit badge pamphlets. During his tenure with the Boy Scouts Don was also in Public Relations and was a speech writer for numerous Chief Scout Executives. Don graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. He served in the Navy for two tours, first as an enlisted man during World War II and later as a commissioned officer during the Korean War. Don and Eleanor loved traveling all over the world and he enjoyed reading, especially political and historical non-fiction.
